WHAT
IS ASSISTED LIVING?
An assisted
living residence is a special combination of housing, personalized
supportive services and health care designed to meet the needs -
both scheduled and unscheduled - of those who need help with activities
of daily living. Assisted living providers offer:
- Cost effective care that
is personalized for individual needs
- Independence for each
resident A Respectful and dignified treatment
- A safe, residential environment
- Involvement of family
and friends in care, planning, and implementation
- Choice of care and lifestyle
Assisted living
is currently a $12 - 15 billion per year industry and is expected
to double by the year 2000. Factors contributing to this growth
are:
- The American population
is aging. According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, the population
of people 85 and older should increase to 39.3% by the year 2000.
- Census figures show that
6.5 million older Americans need assistance with daily living activities.
WHO LIVES IN ASSISTED LIVING RESIDENCES?
Currently,
more than a million Americans live in an estimated 30,000 Assisted
Living residences. A typical resident
is age 83, female, and is either widowed or single. Residents may
need help with activities such as bathing, eating, or dressing.
WHO PAYS THE BILL?
Residents
or their families generally pay the cost of care from their own
financial resources. Depending on the nature of an individual's
health insurance program or long-term care insurance policy, costs
may be reimbursed.
IS ASSISTED
LIVING REGULATED?
Yes, the State
of Texas currently has regulations applicable to Assisted Living
Residences.
